Surfers, lifeguards eyeing motorized surfboards

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

surf board

PONCE INLET — It is “the James Bond surfboard.”

That’s the most common first reaction to the motor-propelled surfboards made by WaveJet, said Kelly Virgulto of the San Diego-based company.

But WaveJet isn’t relying on its “Meet the Jetsons” flying-car flair.

The motorized board has military potential and is a possible game-changer for ocean rescues that’s attracted the attention of Volusia County’s Beach Patrol and other agencies across the country.

And to help mold the new company’s image, WaveJet has hired local surfers. Following the Surf Expo in Orlando, the company came to Ponce Inlet for a filming session last week.

Cory Lopez of Daytona Beach Shores is one of two pro surfers WaveJet is sponsoring, and Patrick Eichstaedt of New Smyrna Beach is producing a video.

Mike Railey, WaveJet’s inventor and CEO, said the WaveJet can push a 250-pound surfer at 7 mph. Lopez tested WaveJet’s speed on a shortboard against New Smyrna Beach’s No. 137 ranked surfer in the world.

“I raced Eric Geiselman the other day and I didn’t even paddle. I was going faster than he could paddle,” Lopez said. “It’s a whole different surfing experience.”

For lifeguards, the WaveJet’s appeal is versatility.

Lifeguard corps in Rhode Island, California, Hawaii and now Volusia County have tested the boards, Railey said.

Volusia County Beach Patrol Deputy Chief Scott Petersohn took a WaveJet out for a test ride last week, and even got in on the filming, wearing a helmet cam like Cory Lopez.

“It’s definitely got applications for rescue,” Petersohn said.

“It’s not a replacement for a (power) ski, the ski is like the workhorse,” he said.

But Petersohn said the four-stroke engines in the skis can unexpectedly not want to start, and the 500-pound machines require a trailer to launch, limiting where they can be put in the water.

A WaveJet could easily go off the inlet side of the jetty rocks, for instance, as well as allow a lifeguard to attend to a victim while moving back to shore or more easily rescue multiple victims, he said.

90-Year-Old Realizes Dream of Becoming Lifeguard

Monday, January 16th, 2012

90 year old lifeguard

A 90-year-old former professional swimmer and diver fulfilled a dream of her youth when she became an honorary lifeguard at the Ed Isakson-Alpharetta Family YMCA on Friday, Jan. 13.

Hazal, a resident of Sunrise at East Cobb, traveled to the YMCA on a chilly afternoon with some of her fellow residents in tow to go poolside at the indoor aquatic center. She was given her own whistle, lifeguard certificate and lifeguard rescue float before being taken poolside.

Alpharetta’s Y was a stand-in for the Northeast Cobb Family YMCA, which had a 30-foot window blow out due to the high winds the day before.

Being a lifeguard had been a dream when she was a young woman in Dallas, Texas, but that’s all it could be at the time because only men were allowed to be lifeguards at the time. Second Wind Dreams helped her realize that dream.

Second Wind Dreams was founded by P.K. Beville of Marietta on Jan. 15, 1997.

Second Wind Dreams, an international non-profit, celebrated 15 years of making dreams come true for elders in long term care communities on Jan. 13, Dream Day 2012, according to P.K. Beville, the organization’s founder.

HealthQuest in Flemington starting lifeguard competition

FLEMINGTON — HealthQuest Family Fitness lifeguards will stack up against one another in their bid to become victorious at the inaugural Best at the Quest HealthQuest Lifeguard Challenge.

The competition’s events will feature a 500-meter swim, a mile run, a 40-yard sprint, a 100-meter rescue board paddle and three-one minute strength events, scoring participants on max reps in push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.

Lifeguards will be separated into five divisions: men’s over 18, men’s under 18, women’s over 18, women’s under 18 and over 40.

Kenan Lake, aquatics operation manager, said he created the challenge to raise the standard while keeping it fun for department bragging rights.

“I came up with this idea as a way to get lifeguards more engaged in the physical aspect of their jobs. I also want to make this a more fun place to work. A lot of our staff is very competitive, so feeding off of that, I came up with this idea to see who’s best of the Quest.”

Aside from showcasing their skills, Lake knows that the main benefit to the competition is to help participants measure their proficiencies and weaknesses.

“If there’s an area they’re weak at, it’s something for them to practice. It’s important to be at a higher level of physical fitness, and that’s what this is designed to do, to motivate them in a fun competitive way so they can be more proficient.”

The field of 20 competitors encompasses a wide variety of athletes with various backgrounds, some of which include Lake, a former Army infantry squad leader and an adventure racing enthusiast; Army National Guardsman Brent Long; aquatics manager Caitlyn McTeigue, an active rock climber, surfer and military obstacle race fanatic; Hunterdon Central Regional High School senior Brandon Suk, a Monmouth University football prospect; and swim siblings Jess and Samantha, who both are competitors on the Warren Hills Regional High School swim team.

Swim time

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

By Nicole Lockley

It’s Memorial Day weekend and for some Americans it’s a time to acknowledge the efforts of our armed forces. For others it just means an extra day off.

But this weekend also signifies an event that all children, and even adults, look forward to. It doesn’t involve gifts, toys or candy. It’s the indication that summer is fast approaching. And that means the local pools are open once again.

Starting Saturday, country clubs, water parks and community swimming pools open their facilities for those who wish to dive into some good ol’ H2O to get away from the heat. And with the rising temperatures, they’re just in time.

The waters that wait

» Residents of Pulaski County can visit the newly refurbishedEvelyn Alexander Water Park in Randolph Park. Equipped with an eight lane lap pool, a 38 foot long water slide, newly refurbished water toys for the kids, and several other water related objects, this a place that can almost guarantee fun in the sun.

Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12:30 to 6 p.m. Sundays. It offers discounted prices for children under 2-years-old and seniors. For a full list of prices and how Pulaski County residents can purchase discount pool passes, visit their website atwww.randolphpark.org/waterpk.htm.

» If you live in Giles County you have the option of visiting Pearisburg Town Pool. The 11-year-old facility has a heated, 25-meter, six-lane pool and a 12-foot-deep diving well. The pool is handicap-accessible. There is a wading pool for small children. This pool is scheduled to be open from noon to 6 p.m. daily. For additional information on times, recreational programs, prices or to book a private party, call (540) 921-2335.

» Montgomery County residents can leap over to Frog Pond on Saturday’s from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday’s from noon to 6 p.m. When the Montgomery County school system releases, regular pool hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Extended hours on Tuesday nights are intended to encourage family swim nights.

The Frog Pond will also be hosting their Rock the Pond Concert starting July 15 with The Kind, a folk rock band from the New River Valley.

For fee information and other additional information call 540-382- 6981 or visit www.montgomerycountyva.gov.

» If you’d rather save your sunscreen for another day, the Blacksburg and Christiansburg Aquatic Centers are open to the public as well.

The Blacksburg Aquatic Center is a year-round indoor aquatic facility with a six-lane, 25-yard pool open for lessons and free swimming. There’s a splash pool for children, and adults can take advantage of the hot tub.

The center will be closed on Memorial Day but their operating hours are 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

However, public swimming hours are subject to change on a weekly basis, so swimmers are advised to visit their website for hours on www.blackburg.va.us, under the Parks and Recreation tab.

The Christiansburg Aquatic Center will also be closed on Memorial Day weekend. The Aquatic Center offers swim lessons, summer camp, daycare and water fitness classes. The center also has water park features that are turned on at 11 a.m. daily.

Operating hours are 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 pm. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

Community swim hours are subject to change daily so it is advised to visit their website atwww.christiansburg.org or call (540) 381- 7665.

The best summer jobs for teens!

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

The recession has made getting a job more difficult for everyone, but if you’re a teenager looking for summer jobs, the competition can be overwhelming. Nothing ventured, nothing gained still applies, however – even at minimum wage. Here are some hot summer jobs that typically employ younger, less experienced workers.

The kids are alright, thanks to the babysitter

Baby sitting and nanny positions will always need to be filled, and responsible, energetic young people who remain cool under fire are a good fit. Laura Davis, owner of College Nannies & Tutors franchises in three states told Bankrate that her company places hundreds of teens in such summer jobs. Another company named Care.com has connections with thousands of local colleges that help connect prospective caregivers with families.

Make it a Meatballs summer

There are typically jobs available at summer camps for kids, including day camps, weeklong or for the entire summer season. If a teen is active and outgoing, teaching children about camping or canoeing can be a breeze. According to Sandy Blondin of Fox Valley Special Recreation Association of Aurora, Ill., there are numerous benefits for teens beyond a paycheck.

“Being on a summer day camp staff offers important skills in team building, leadership, problem-solving and child development,” she said.

Check out websites like American Camp Association, Summer Camp Jobs and Camp Channel for links to summer camp jobs for teens.

Test the waters of being a lifeguard

Warm summer temperatures mean that beaches, water parks and public pools around the country will be open for business. Career websites like Simply Hired have more than 1,000 summer jobs listed for lifeguards, and that’s just one site. For teens who are strong swimmers and have certifications in CPR and first aid, spending golden summer days by the ocean or pool is a slam dunk. The key is to apply now.

“These numbers are promising for those looking for employment this summer,” says Daniel Greenberg, chief marketing officer of Simply Hired.

Summer amusement at the park

Summer is the busy season for most amusement parks in the U.S., and seasonal jobs must be filled. According to Bankrate, Six Flags Great America near Chicago hires 3,200 season employees for groundskeeping, ticket sales and entertainment. Disney and other chains look to fill similar positions. Free park admission is typically a benefit of these summer jobs.

Work retail, get a mall discount

Summer hiring for retail work has begun early this year, so jump on the opportunity now. Teens hang out at the mall, so why not get paid for it? Traditionally, larger malls hire a few thousand teens for summer jobs, although the recession may force some older workers into such jobs. Learning sales and improving social skills are two benefits of mall work for teens. The customary mall discount may be more immediately appreciated, however.

Surf’s up! The best surf parks, surf pools and artificial waves

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Surfer at sunset

The artificial wave surfing era is coming. Progress is being made almost every month and the wave rides are getting almost perfect. In the next years, there will be a button for classic overhead barreling right-handers and another one for a beginner’s three-foot wave lesson.

Surf pools and surf parks are being installed everywhere, from Asia to North America. In Europe, the Instant Engineering Company developed what is considered the best artificial surf experience ever shown – the Wavegarden is no longer a prototype and is breaking barriers from the Basque Country, in Spain.

While the surf community and the surf entrepreneurs seem to be anxious to ride and multiply the beautiful Wavegarden, there’s one man taking notes. The Kelly Slater Wave Company promises the impossible and the best robotic surf ride of the history of the sport.

“Cool they made a wave, but I think you’ll all be very happy when you see what we have in store. :) ”, said Slater on his Twitter account, after the Wavegarden boys unveiled their own artificial wave.

Meanwhile, there are other interesting wave rides. In the Malaysia Theme Park’s Sunway Lagoon, you can hit the surf in the “world’s largest man-made surf beach, backed by the world’s largest wave churning machine”. For the Kuala Lumpur and regional surfers, it’s a good option.

Murphys Waves, a Scottish company, has already shown good work. This artificial wave machine generator has equipped Siam Park, in Tenerife, Spain, where Dany Bruch invented tow-in windsurfing. The ride is long and consistent.

In the Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, every 90 seconds, waves crash to the shore of a pool that’s twice the size of a football field.

Flowrider (Wave Loch) and Surfstream (American Wave Machines) have developed and installed artificial static waves that generate endless joy rides. Their 360º business model is capable of turning the entire surf pool complex into a profitable activity. If the Seagaia Ocean Dome had understood what it takes to run a successful wave park, Japan’s innovative surf pool might have had another life.

Finally, the Weber Wave Pools, from Australia, present one of the cleverest technical suggestions for creating waves in the middle of nowhere. Greg Webber, the founder of the company, believes that his concept “makes multiple, real, perfect waves that continually break all the time. The riding time per wave is 60 seconds per minute”.

The main artificial wave surfing companies, surf pools, machines and Parks are:

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon
Malaysia Theme Park’s Sunway Lagoon
Kelly Slater Wave Company
Siam Park (Murphys Waves)
FlowRider (Wave Loch)
Surfstream (American Wave Machines)
Wavegarden (Instant Engineering Company)
Weber Wave Pools (Liquid Time)
