How a Lifeguard Job Can Help Your College Application
Thursday, February 21st, 2013
Applying to colleges can be more than stressful. Between trying to get excellent SAT scores, making straight A’s, and keeping up with extra-curricular activities, perfecting the college application just seems impossible. And, on top of all of that, the little worry in the back of every teenager’s mind lingers: Will my application stand out?
Most people realize that a great SAT score can really improve one’s chances of gaining entrance into college, but something else can really make an applicant stand out: a job. To admissions personnel, an applicant who has a part-time job shows a higher degree of maturity and independence.
According to Alice Margraff, a college counselor at McDonogh School in Baltimore, “Getting a job shows that a student takes initiative and is willing to spend their time doing something productive. An applicant who works also exhibits traits that would look good on a college resume.”
I don’t have any time to work. I play sports, take SAT prep courses, and I have endless amounts of homework, every teen thinks. Think again. A summer job, like lifeguarding, is the perfect answer to balancing work, school and play.
Being a summer lifeguard is a fun and rewarding job in many ways. For starters, lifeguards get to work while sitting out in the sun (with sunscreen of course); what is better than that? In addition to being enjoyable, a lifeguard job looks great on a college application.
“Lifeguarding requires a lot of skills that would be looked very favorably upon to admissions officers,” Alice Margraff believes. “A lifeguard has to be productive and mature, which are very good qualities to demonstrate [to colleges and universities].”
In order to become a lifeguard, one must get American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED certified. These certifications are an effective way to leave a great impression on an admissions officer. The college or university will be able to infer that an applicant that has worked as a lifeguard has a heightened sense of responsibility and a maturity level that is required in order to handle stressful, life-threatening situations that may occur on the job. Lifeguards, trained to react quickly in emergency situations, are great assets to any college campus.
Additionally, lifeguards exhibit great leadership skills. Lifeguards need to be able to take charge of the patrons of a pool, making sure that everything is running smoothly and safely. These lifeguard leadership skills can impress admissions personnel.
More than just a resume builder, there are more perks in this rewarding job. First, scheduling is personalized and flexible. For example, when working for Guard for Life, the American Pool Enterprises lifeguard brand, lifeguards are able to help shape their schedules online – suggesting the location, shift hours and days they work themselves. Second, lifeguards are able to make money while working on their tans. Lastly, a lifeguard experiences conflict resolution and works on their customer service skills while interacting with patrons at a pool. This skill is not only useful while lifeguarding, but also in everyday life.
So lifeguarding looks good on a college application and is a great job overall, but how will you manage your time? Often balancing work, school, and activities seems utterly impossible. It’s not! The summer job of lifeguarding makes juggling your schedule easier with the help of flexible scheduling and attentive supervisors. On top of all that, a lifeguarding job’s “peak” season is during your vacation.
Overall, as a job that allows you to spend time outdoors and exhibit skills and responsibilities that look great on any college application, lifeguarding seems like a top choice for summer employment. If you are looking for a way to enhance your college application and stand out from a crowd, apply for a job as a lifeguard.

Surfers, lifeguards eyeing motorized surfboards
Tuesday, January 24th, 2012PONCE INLET — It is “the James Bond surfboard.”
That’s the most common first reaction to the motor-propelled surfboards made by WaveJet, said Kelly Virgulto of the San Diego-based company.
But WaveJet isn’t relying on its “Meet the Jetsons” flying-car flair.
The motorized board has military potential and is a possible game-changer for ocean rescues that’s attracted the attention of Volusia County’s Beach Patrol and other agencies across the country.
And to help mold the new company’s image, WaveJet has hired local surfers. Following the Surf Expo in Orlando, the company came to Ponce Inlet for a filming session last week.
Cory Lopez of Daytona Beach Shores is one of two pro surfers WaveJet is sponsoring, and Patrick Eichstaedt of New Smyrna Beach is producing a video.
Mike Railey, WaveJet’s inventor and CEO, said the WaveJet can push a 250-pound surfer at 7 mph. Lopez tested WaveJet’s speed on a shortboard against New Smyrna Beach’s No. 137 ranked surfer in the world.
“I raced Eric Geiselman the other day and I didn’t even paddle. I was going faster than he could paddle,” Lopez said. “It’s a whole different surfing experience.”
For lifeguards, the WaveJet’s appeal is versatility.
Lifeguard corps in Rhode Island, California, Hawaii and now Volusia County have tested the boards, Railey said.
Volusia County Beach Patrol Deputy Chief Scott Petersohn took a WaveJet out for a test ride last week, and even got in on the filming, wearing a helmet cam like Cory Lopez.
“It’s definitely got applications for rescue,” Petersohn said.
“It’s not a replacement for a (power) ski, the ski is like the workhorse,” he said.
But Petersohn said the four-stroke engines in the skis can unexpectedly not want to start, and the 500-pound machines require a trailer to launch, limiting where they can be put in the water.
A WaveJet could easily go off the inlet side of the jetty rocks, for instance, as well as allow a lifeguard to attend to a victim while moving back to shore or more easily rescue multiple victims, he said.

90-Year-Old Realizes Dream of Becoming Lifeguard
Monday, January 16th, 2012A 90-year-old former professional swimmer and diver fulfilled a dream of her youth when she became an honorary lifeguard at the Ed Isakson-Alpharetta Family YMCA on Friday, Jan. 13.
Hazal, a resident of Sunrise at East Cobb, traveled to the YMCA on a chilly afternoon with some of her fellow residents in tow to go poolside at the indoor aquatic center. She was given her own whistle, lifeguard certificate and lifeguard rescue float before being taken poolside.
Alpharetta’s Y was a stand-in for the Northeast Cobb Family YMCA, which had a 30-foot window blow out due to the high winds the day before.
Being a lifeguard had been a dream when she was a young woman in Dallas, Texas, but that’s all it could be at the time because only men were allowed to be lifeguards at the time. Second Wind Dreams helped her realize that dream.
Second Wind Dreams was founded by P.K. Beville of Marietta on Jan. 15, 1997.
Second Wind Dreams, an international non-profit, celebrated 15 years of making dreams come true for elders in long term care communities on Jan. 13, Dream Day 2012, according to P.K. Beville, the organization’s founder.

HealthQuest in Flemington starting lifeguard competition
Tuesday, January 10th, 2012FLEMINGTON — HealthQuest Family Fitness lifeguards will stack up against one another in their bid to become victorious at the inaugural Best at the Quest HealthQuest Lifeguard Challenge.
The competition’s events will feature a 500-meter swim, a mile run, a 40-yard sprint, a 100-meter rescue board paddle and three-one minute strength events, scoring participants on max reps in push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.
Lifeguards will be separated into five divisions: men’s over 18, men’s under 18, women’s over 18, women’s under 18 and over 40.
Kenan Lake, aquatics operation manager, said he created the challenge to raise the standard while keeping it fun for department bragging rights.
“I came up with this idea as a way to get lifeguards more engaged in the physical aspect of their jobs. I also want to make this a more fun place to work. A lot of our staff is very competitive, so feeding off of that, I came up with this idea to see who’s best of the Quest.”
Aside from showcasing their skills, Lake knows that the main benefit to the competition is to help participants measure their proficiencies and weaknesses.
“If there’s an area they’re weak at, it’s something for them to practice. It’s important to be at a higher level of physical fitness, and that’s what this is designed to do, to motivate them in a fun competitive way so they can be more proficient.”
The field of 20 competitors encompasses a wide variety of athletes with various backgrounds, some of which include Lake, a former Army infantry squad leader and an adventure racing enthusiast; Army National Guardsman Brent Long; aquatics manager Caitlyn McTeigue, an active rock climber, surfer and military obstacle race fanatic; Hunterdon Central Regional High School senior Brandon Suk, a Monmouth University football prospect; and swim siblings Jess and Samantha, who both are competitors on the Warren Hills Regional High School swim team.

10 Green Tips for Earth Day 2011 | Work for a GREEN company this summer!
Friday, April 22nd, 2011
Do you find yourself recycling, using less plastic bags, and donating clothing? You must care about the environment! This summer, work for a company that cares about sustainability and preservation.
We recognize that we can reduce our environmental impact, and that of our employees, by improving our operating practices and using more sustainable materials and equipment. The opportunity to reduce the burden on our local and regional environments is something that we take seriously and are committed to achieving.
Here are 10 tips to add to your GREEN routine this Earth Day 2011!
1. When You’re Done Surfing and IMing (or visiting www.guardforlife.com, Turn Your Computer Off.
If you shut your machine off before bedtime, you’ll save an average of $90 worth of electricity a year — tell your parents that, and ask for a raise in your allowance! If you must leave your computer on, tell it to go into “sleep” or “hibernate” mode, which saves power. Save even more juice by unplugging your computer (or flip the switch on a surge protector) to stop the “phantom load” problem.
2. Put Together a Cool Vintage Outfit.
Impress your friends with your fab style sense when you show up to a party in a vintage Betsey Johnson number (you can find gently used clothing for a steal at thrift stores and garage sales). Go glam by raiding your parents’ closet for 1970s and ’80s pants, vests and jackets.
3. Turn Off the Lights Behind You.
Remember that riddle about the tree falling in the forest when no one is around? Well, why leave a light on when no one is around? It’s just plain waste. Your parents may even bug you about it because they have to pay the energy bills, and they know lighting accounts for an average of 11% of that total.
4. Help Lose the Litter.
Littering is a blight on our landscape that chokes wildlife and releases toxic chemicals when it breaks down. Plus it’s just plain ugly! Many neighborhoods hold regular cleanups, so volunteer! It’s an easy way to get some exercise while making a difference and meeting new people.
5. Go Veggie Once Per Week.
The commercial meat industry takes a huge toll on our environment. It takes 4.8 pounds of grain (fed to cattle) to produce one pound of beef, as opposed to serving those grains directly to hungry people. One pound of wheat can be grown with 60 pounds of water, but a pound of red meat requires 2,500 to 6,000 pounds of water. In a world where water, land and energy are premiums, making a small cutback in the meat you eat is healthy for the planet, as well as your body.
6. Instead of Buying Bottled Water, Get a Refill.
Ever see an empty water bottle tossed by the side of the road? Less than 20% of those single-use containers make it to the recycling bin. They also waste fuel for shipping — water is heavy! Get a cool metal bottle instead and fill it up when you’re thirsty, and cut down on the expense and waste.
7. Get a New Shampoo — and Make It Natural!
Typical drugstore shampoos can have some pretty scary-sounding chemicals in them (just look at the labels!), but why take the risk of putting all those lab compounds on your sensitive scalp? Lots of companies make more natural shampoos from plant extracts and even organically certified ingredients. They smell great, and are less toxic to make.
8. Download (Legally!) the Latest Album from an Eco-friendly Star.
John Mayer. KT Tunstall. Dave Matthews Band. Kanye West. A number of today’s hottest musicians are also going green in big ways, by running tour buses on clean-burning biodiesel and recycling all their show waste. Do your part by buying music online, which cuts out waste from shipping and all those CDs and cases.
9. Buy a Comfy Organic Cotton T-Shirt.
Cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops, and millions of gallons of toxic residue runs off cotton fields into rivers and lakes, poisoning wildlife. Plus, why put something that had been treated in harsh chemicals so near your skin? Organic cotton is now widely available (from H&M to Wal-Mart to boutiques), in the cutest styles and graphics.
10. Take Friends and/or Family to See The 11th Hour. Leonardo DiCaprio’s recent doc is a heavy hitter, but it’s also inspiring and gorgeous. It just may be the push to get your dad to start recycling his papers, or your friend to stop littering. And it’s pretty entertaining.
11. Bonus Tip: Join the Guard for Life team!
If you are looking for a summer job where you can earn good money, receive training, improve your resume and be GREEN, then you should APPLY NOW.
