Class Descriptions
Lifeguard Training Course
Prerequisites: Minimum age 15
Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
- 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick
- 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence
- 100 yards of front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both
- Timed Event – Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute, 40 seconds (When returning to the starting point, the participant’s face must remain above the water, and the participant must hold the 10-pound object with both hands).
- PurposeIf you’re 15 years of older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start. This course helps you develop skills and experience valued by colleges and future employers. You’ll develop new skills and learn how to deal effectively with people, fostering a “take charge” attitude. You’ll also get a participants manual.
- Learning ObjectivesSurveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries, rescue skills in the water and on land, first aid training and professional rescuer CPR to help you prepare for any emergency, professional lifeguard responsibilities, like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons.
- Certification RequirementsAttend all class sessions, successfully perform all required skills, successfully complete three final skill scenarios; and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.
- Certification ValidityLifeguard Training (including First Aid)- 3 years, CPR for Lifeguards-1 year.
- Length of ClassApproximately 32 hours.

Lifeguard Review
Prerequisites: Must bring to class a current Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification cards.
- PurposeThis course re-certifies those who hold a current Lifeguard Training certification.
- Learning ObjectivesSurveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries, rescue skills in the water and on land, first aid training and professional rescuer CPR to help you prepare for any emergency, professional lifeguard responsibilities, like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons.
- Certification RequirementsAttend all class sessions, successfully perform all required skills, successfully complete three final skill scenarios; and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.
- Certification ValidityLifeguard Training (including First Aid)- 3 years, CPR for Lifeguards-1 year.
- Length of ClassApproximately 16 hours
CPR/AED for Lifeguards Review
Prerequisites: Must bring to class a current CPR/AED for Lifeguards certification card.
- PurposeThe purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards Review course is to review the course content within the formal class.
- Learning Objectives
- Learn the role of the professional rescuer in the EMS. System
- understand the Emergency Action Principles when providing emergency care for a victim
- learn how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies; and
- learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Certification RequirementsAttend all class sessions, successfully perform all required skills, successfully complete three final skill scenarios; and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.
- Certification ValidityCPR/AED for Lifeguards-1 year.

CPR/AED for Lifeguards
Prerequisites: None
- PurposeThe purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards course is to teach professional rescuers (those with a duty to act) the skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies. This includes the use of automated external defibrillation to care for a victim of cardiac arrest.
- Learning Objectives
- Learn the role of the professional rescuer in the EMS. System
- understand the Emergency Action Principles when providing emergency care for a victim
- learn how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies; and
- learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Certification RequirementsAttend all class sessions, successfully perform all required skills, successfully complete three final skill scenarios; and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.
- Certification ValidityCPR/AED for Lifeguards-1 year.
- Length of ClassApproximately 8 hours
Lifeguard Instructor Course
Prerequisites: Minimum age 17, posses a fundamentals of instructor training certificate issued in the last 12 months or a current Health and Safety Services instructor authorization, pass the precourse written examination with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better in each of the four sections, successfully perform all of the skills in the lifeguarding instructor precourse sessions, the skills in the precourse session include swimming, lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer skills.
- PurposeThe purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach Lifeguard Training (including first aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Basic Water Rescue, and Water Safety Presentations. The training in this instructor course prepares instructor candidates by developing their understanding of how to use course and presentation materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress.
- Learning ObjectivesDemonstrate characteristics required of an American Red Cross representative role model, be completely familiar with the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program materials, plan and conduct Lifeguard Training (including first aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Basic Water Rescue, and Water Safety presentations, successfully demonstrate specific skills.
- Certification RequirementsDemonstrate compentency in all required lifeguarding, AED, and oxygen administration skills, successfully complete four practice-teaching assignments; and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.Certification received upon successfully completion of the course- American Red Cross Health and Safety Services Instructor Certificate indicating Lifeguarding.
- Length of ClassApproximately 27 hours.
Pool Operator Course
Prerequisites: Minimum age 16 years old
- PurposeCourse is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to safely and efficiently manage and operate swimming pools and spas.
- Learning Objectives
- State regulations governing operation of public and semi-public pools,
- The pool operator’s responsibility for protection of the patrons’ health,
- Calculation of swimming pool volume, filter surface area, and flow rate,
- Filtration and circulation, *Pool water testing, sanitation chemistry, and water balance,
- Heaters and hot water chemistry,
- Management of aquatic facilities,
- Pool operational problems and chemical adjustments,
- Care of seasonal pools,
- Disease and accident prevention, including safety in the workplace.
- Certification RequirementsPass a written examination with a grade of 80 percent or better.
- Certification ValidityCertified Pool Operator Certification- 3 years
